When " I don't know what to say" becomes something beautiful.

Updated: Sep 24
Not long ago, I sat with a couple at the very beginning of their wedding journey.
They were excited, full of love, and completely certain about one thing... they wanted their ceremony to feel meaningful. But when the conversation gently turned to vows, there was a pause… followed by a quiet admission:
“We don’t know what to say.”
It’s something I hear more often than you might think.
For many couples, vows feel like the most important part of the ceremony, and at the same time, the most daunting. There can be a sense that the words need to be perfect, profound, or somehow worthy of the moment.
But here is what I gently shared with them and what I want you to know too:
Your vows don’t need to be perfect. They simply need to be true.
There is no one way to say “I do”
Some couples are drawn to the familiarity of traditional vows, words that have been spoken for generations, carrying a quiet sense of continuity and grounding.
Others feel more at home expressing things in their own words, sharing pieces of their story, what they admire in one another, and the promises they want to make for the future.
Many find themselves somewhere in between.
A gentle blend of tradition and personal expression often creates something incredibly special -Something that feels both timeless and deeply personal.
Finding words that feel like you
As we spoke, I could see their concern begin to soften.
They didn’t need to write something elaborate. They didn’t need to impress anyone.
They simply needed to find a way to say:
“This is what you mean to me.”“This is what I promise.”
And that can be done in the simplest, most sincere way.
Sometimes it sounds like:
I choose you, with a full and grateful heart…
Or:
With you, I feel at home and I promise to nurture that, always.
Not perfect. Not complicated. Just real.
You don’t have to do this alone
One of the things I always reassure couples of is this:
You will never be left to figure this out by yourself.
Some couples come with words already forming in their hearts. Others need a little structure, a little guidance, or simply the confidence to begin.
Whether that means helping you shape your thoughts, offering gentle suggestions, or guiding you through your vows on the day itself, I will meet you exactly where you are.
There is no pressure to perform. Only space to express.
A moment to be felt, not perfected
By the end of our conversation, something had shifted.
The pressure had lifted, and in its place was a quiet confidence.
They didn’t need to get it “right”, they just needed to be themselves.
And that is always where the most meaningful moments are found.
Because your vows are not about saying something extraordinary.
They are about saying something true, in a way that reflects who you are, and the life you are choosing to build together.
If you’re at the beginning of this part of your journey and feeling unsure where to start, know that you’re not alone.
And know that, together, we will find the words.
Words that feel natural. Words that feel like you.
Words that will stay with you long after the day itself has passed.
