The Hidden Hazards of a Summer Wedding (That Nobody Warns You About!)

There is something undeniably magical about a summer wedding. Blue skies. Long evenings. Gardens in full bloom. Drinks on the lawn. Golden hour photographs that belong in a magazine.

It's everything you've dreamed of.

Until...

You realise your carefully applied makeup is now negotiating its own exit strategy.

Your beautifully fitted dress has become a portable sauna.

And somewhere around the canapé reception your hair decides it has plans of its own.

If you're Zimbabwean, South African, Zambian or from pretty much anywhere in Southern Africa with gloriously textured or mixed-race hair, you'll already know the word.

Dwinch.

No explanation required. One tiny bit of humidity and your beautifully styled hair announces,

"Let operation frizz commence."

The frizz begins - one determined curl at a time. Honestly... it's almost impressive.

Summer is wonderful... but she's not always your friend

Summer weddings really are beautiful. They also have a habit of exposing things nobody mentions on Pinterest.

Like...

That enthusiastic hug from Uncle Tony which leaves half his body heat on your wedding dress.

The bridesmaids who have mastered smiling while sweat slowly rolls down their backs.

The groom who's wondering why he chose a three-piece wool suit.

Photographs where everyone's glowing...and not in the way the photographer promised.

Let's also have a moment for underarms. You know the photo.

The one where everyone throws their hands in the air celebrating...and all anyone notices afterwards are the sweat patches.

No one tells you these things during wedding planning.

My own lesson

Our reception was in a marquee. It was around 27°C. At first it felt perfect.

Then the speeches happened. The heat built. The air stood still.

Guests started quietly migrating outside where there was even the slightest hint of a breeze.

By the time the DJ was ready to fill the dance floor...the dance floor was empty.

The guests hadn't left because they weren't enjoying themselves. They'd escaped because they were melting. Looking back, we'd have moved the dance floor outside if we could have.

Problem solved.

Things I'd absolutely do differently

I'd have a second dress for the reception. Not another expensive dress. Just something light, floaty and comfortable for the evening. Your photographs are already done. Your formal moments are complete. Go and enjoy your own party.

I'd also keep a little emergency kit close by.

Blotting papers. Powder. Mini deodorant. Lipstick. Hairbrush. Hair ties. Safety pins. A handheld fan.

Plasters. Water. Trust me. Future You will think Present You is an absolute genius.

Think about your venue, not just how it looks

Marquees are stunning. They're also giant greenhouses if the weather turns. Barns look gorgeous.

But some become surprisingly warm. Historic venues can be beautiful...until you discover they were built hundreds of years before air conditioning.

If you're planning an outdoor ceremony, think about your guests too.

Could elderly relatives manage sitting in direct sun? Is there shade? Cold water? Parasols? Fans?

Could the ceremony be moved thirty minutes later to avoid the hottest part of the day?

Tiny adjustments can completely change how comfortable everyone feels.

Hair deserves its own paragraph

Let's come back to the Dwinch. If you know...you know.

Humidity has no respect for your perfectly styled hair.

If your hair has even the slightest tendency to rebel, consider working with it rather than against it.

Elegant updos. Soft curls. Beautiful natural texture. Styles that won't spend the whole afternoon fighting the weather. You'll enjoy your day far more if you're not checking every reflective surface wondering whether your hair has doubled in size.

The perfect wedding isn't perfect

Here's the lovely thing. Almost nobody remembers whether it was 27°C. They remember laughing.

They remember your vows. They remember the love they felt for you and between you.

So plan for the weather. Expect the unexpected. Carry the emergency kit.

And respect the strong possibility of a Dwinch.

Your wedding doesn't need to be flawless. It needs to feel like you.

Everything else becomes part of the story you'll laugh about for years afterwards.
