Saying Farewell with Grace...

Long before I became The Celebrant Chaplain, I attended the funeral of a charismatic man I had known for many years.

The crematorium was packed.

People stood in the aisles. The doors remained open for those who simply could not squeeze inside. It was obvious that this was a man who had been deeply loved and whose life had touched a great many others.

As I listened to the ceremony, I heard the dates.

The schools.

The qualifications.

The achievements.

The names of his wife, children and family.

All of those things mattered.

But I kept waiting to hear about the man behind them.

What was it about him that had brought so many people into that room?

What made him him?

That part never really came.

And I remember feeling sad within my sadness.

The facts of his life had been recorded, but somehow the essence of the person I knew had not quite made it into the room.

That experience stayed with me.

The facts are only the beginning

When you entrust me with the farewell of someone you love, of course I need the facts.

Dates matter.

Relationships matter.

Milestones, work, achievements and the significant chapters of a life all help me understand the shape of the person I am being asked to honour.

But for me, they are the starting point.

I will also be listening for the person who lived between those dates.

The character.

The humour.

The quirks.

The values.

The things that mattered to them.

The way they were known by the people closest to them.

Sometimes that comes through in a wonderful story.

Sometimes in a tiny detail.

Sometimes it is in the way a family member's face changes when they begin talking about them.

And sometimes there are parts of a life that a family would rather keep private.

That matters too.

I am listening for recognition

A funeral ceremony cannot contain an entire lifetime.

Nor should it try to.

What I hope to do, is understand enough of what you choose to share to create moments of recognition.

A sentence that makes someone smile.

A story that brings back a familiar memory.

A description that makes somebody quietly think:

Yes. That was them.

Because someone's life is more than the things they achieved.

We also remember how they made us feel.

The things they always said.

The habits that drove us mad.

The ordinary moments that did not seem important at the time, but suddenly become incredibly precious when someone is no longer there.

Those are often the things that make a life feel real.

Every family shares differently

Some families arrive with stories tumbling out of them.

Others find speaking much harder.

Sometimes grief makes memories difficult to organise.

Sometimes relationships have been complicated.

Sometimes there are things that simply do not belong in a public ceremony.

There is no right way to tell me about someone you love.

My role is to listen carefully to whatever you feel able to share, to understand as much as I can from it, and to handle that story with sensitivity and compassion.

I am not there to turn a person into somebody they were not.

I am there to help create a farewell that feels true to the person you knew.

The person behind the facts

The facts of a life give us its structure.

But somewhere between the dates, the jobs, the homes, the achievements and the milestones was a human being who laughed, loved, irritated people, encouraged them, made mistakes, created memories and occupied a particular place in the lives of others.

That is the person I will be trying to find.

Not a perfect version.

Not a list of accomplishments.

The person you remember.

Because when somebody has been loved enough to leave a space that can never be filled, I believe their farewell should allow us, for a little while, to glimpse the person who once filled it.

That, for me, is saying farewell with Grace.
